Although not the nicest things to handle, hooking black lugworms usually results in a distinctive stain (and smell) on your fingers akin to those of smokers. Despite this, in many coastal areas, these black lugworms can prove very tempting to all sorts of species of fish, from codling to plaice. They should definitely not be overlooked as a bait, find out in this article how to hook them perfectly to catch the most fish…
Where to Get Lugworm?
Like many sea fishing baits, you can either go to your local fishing tackle shop and buy packs of lugworm, or you can save some money and dig them yourself. Where I do most of my sea fishing near Cleveleys, they sell black lugworm wrapped in newspaper in packs of 10 for £2.80. Not bad considering they will easily last a 2-rod 5 hour session, unless there are crabs around which steal the bait from your hook! The other way is to go out at low-tide to mud-flats and look for their casts which look like “Walnut Whips” without the Walnut! There will be two holes, one is just a hole, the other hole is the Walnut Whip lookalike. Once you’ve identified the two holes, you can use a big fork and dig a hole about a foot deep around the holes, and in the middle of the excavated mud will hopefully be a big lugworm.
